Daily intake

The app's Daily intake panel with a sample day: each meal logged by how it compared with its share of a 1,900 calorie target.

Why Volo Health doesn't count every calorie

The label is an estimate. Your log can be too.

Nutrition labels aren't exact. The rules allow a food's real calorie content to be up to 20% higher than its label says.1 Carefully track 2,000 calories a day and you could really be eating as much as 2,400.

So logging every bite to the exact calorie, the way most tracking apps push you to, is a lot of effort spent on numbers that were never that accurate.

What Volo Health does instead

  1. You learn what a meal is worth. Each meal gets its share of your daily target — lunch is a quarter of it, breakfast a little less, dinner a little more — and every amount button shows its calories. Log for a while and you know roughly what a right-on lunch looks like.
  2. You log in steps, not grams.None, way under, under, a bit under, right on, over or way over. Below the goal the steps are a quarter of the meal apart; above it, half. Torn between two? Pick the bigger one — it leaves room for what the label left out.
  3. No false precision.Meal figures land on tens. The calories on an amount button round down, so a step never claims more than its share; meal goals round to the nearest ten, so they still add up to your day. An estimate that ends in a 7 isn't any more accurate than one that ends in a 0.
  4. A target that doesn't count on exercise.Your daily target comes from your height, weight, age and weekly goal at the lowest standard activity level. When you do work out, log what it burned and that day's budget grows by it.

It's built to help you lose weight without chasing a precision the labels can't give you.

1 Under FDA labeling rules (21 CFR 101.9(g)), a food's actual calorie content may be up to 20% above the declared value. ↩

What you do in Volo Health

Your day, your week, and two shared banks — recipes and workouts — that every member adds to. The previews below are the app itself, showing sample data.

Your day, against your target

Settings works out a daily calorie target from your height, weight, age and how much you want to lose each week. The dashboard is where you log against it.

  • Log each meal by how it compared with that meal's share of the target, and tap the food groups it covered.
  • Add water, the calories a workout burned, and your weight for the day.
  • A calendar shows which days you've logged, and a weekly chart lines up how each day went with your food groups, weight, water and workouts.

This week

The dashboard's weekly chart for a sample week: each day's meals against the right-on line, stacked by food group, with weight, water and workout lines.

Your week, planned — shopping list included

Put recipes into each day's meals and workouts into each day, then save the week.

  • As the week goes, mark each meal as eaten as planned or note what you had instead, and mark workouts complete with how they felt.
  • One tap turns the week into a shopping list: every recipe's ingredients combined, scaled to how often you'll make it, and grouped by aisle.
  • Tick items off as they go in the cart, and open any line to see which recipes call for it.
The shopping list the app builds from a sample week of two recipes, grouped by aisle.

A recipe bank every member adds to

All members' recipes live in one shared bank. Anyone can put any of them in their week; only the author can change theirs.

  • Search by title, ingredient or tag.
  • Look ingredients up in the USDA's FoodData Central database — its values are averages too — and nutrition per serving is worked out for you. The ingredients members use most come up first.
  • Split a recipe into ingredient groups, like "Dough" and "Sauce", and use one recipe inside another — its nutrition rolls up.
Two sample recipes as the recipe bank shows them, with calories per serving against that meal's share of the target.

A shared workout bank

Runs, rides and weights sessions written by members.

  • Runs and rides broken into segments with heart-rate zones; weights sessions as exercises with sets and reps.
  • Filter by type, or show only your own.
  • Plan any of them into your week, and the calories a workout burns go into that day's budget.
Three sample workouts as the workout bank shows them: a run and a ride split into heart-rate-zone segments, and a weights session of exercises.

Nutrition progress

A four-phase nutrition plan on your dashboard, starting with clearing out highly processed foods. Tick steps off as you go and see which phase you're in.
